89th And Broke

I'm a young professional living in Astoria (formerly of Williamsburg, the UES and Murray Hill - I move a lot!). I'm always looking for something fun to do or the best place to grab a drink and dinner at an affordable price around the city. Have a suggestion? Email me at Laura AT 89thandbroke DOT com.

Tequilaville – So if I sit at the bar, the beer is $2.75 but at the table it’s $6?

The girls and I headed over to Tequilaville for a quick drink and snack before a show.  As we headed over to midtown, we thought it might be best to avoid our typical Murray Hill bar strip – Blockheads and the Wharf – and grab a drink near Grand Central.  When walking in, we noticed there were amazing bar specials outside, in particular the $5 nachos and $2.75 beers.  The bar was packed, and we quickly found out that these specials are only given at the bar.  We almost gave up in defeat and accepted table seating, until we found out that beers instead would be $6.  I’m all for acting classy and taking the high road and not hovering around the bar, but as someone on a tight budget, this seemed a little absurd.  Luckily, a different waiter informed us there was a second bar upstairs.  Service was atrocious at the upstairs bar – the bartender didn’t have a beer tap and had to run up and down the stairs to get pitchers of beer to fill our order.  It took him at least 10 minutes to ask us for our IDs and have a co-worker examine them (yes we got carded), proceeded to ignore us for 5 minutes, and then pour our beer straight from the pitcher.  The beer was cold, but tasted like it came straight from an Alpha Phi Delta party at Marist College – minus the solo cup.  The nachos were the bright spot of the evening,  decent and big enough to feed two people and leave you not feeling hungry.  All in all, I wouldn’t head back to Tequilaville soon – unless I was early for happy hour, can scoop up a seat at the main bar and in the area.

I’m starting to see a trend with Mexican restuarants, as this is the same problem that has kept me away from Guac Night. They attract you with these amazing deals, but then the catch is that you must horde yourself in a 5×7 space with 500 other people to enjoy it. I’m all for deals, but sometimes convenience is priceless.
