89th And Broke

I'm a young professional living in Astoria (formerly of Williamsburg, the UES and Murray Hill - I move a lot!). I'm always looking for something fun to do or the best place to grab a drink and dinner at an affordable price around the city. Have a suggestion? Email me at Laura AT 89thandbroke DOT com.

UWS’s Gem: Dive Bar

Since I babysit on the UWS, and I’ll be attending school in the fall there as well, I’ve begun exploring the neighborhood quite a bit more. I know it’s a haven for restaurants (often out of my student price range), but I don’t see too many bars. The other night my friend/ex-coworker and I (who now works on the UWS) needed to find a spot to catch up, and a quick Google search for “bars on the UWS” brought us to Dive Bar on 96th and Amsterdam.

There are 3 locations in total, but this review is just about the 96th location, however I can’t wait to try the others as well. They have a bunch of great beers on tap (my favorite the other night was Ithaca Beer’s Partly Sunny) and you can even buy or bring your growler and fill it up which is a nice treat for beer lovers.

Their happy hour runs from 4-7 pm and all beers sold for $6 a pint (think nearly all beers with an ABV of 7% and lower) are $4 which is a real steal for some of these craft beers. Regularly, beers run from $4 a pint (Bud Light only) to $8 or maybe even $9, but some are also sold by a smaller mug for a dollar less. They also have a bunch of tequila and bourbon on hand if that’s your cup of tea.

As far as the food menu goes, my eyes were first drawn to the all-day breakfast. I mean come on, does it get much better? (Clearly breakfast is my favorite meal of the day) I also heard great things about their fish tacos which I want to try next time, and my friend ordered a chicken and a beef taco ($3 a piece) and was very satisfied.

Despite my penchant for eggs and pancakes at any hour of the day, I could not refuse the awesome mussels deal: $12 for a huge pot of steamed mussels, a large plate of fries and a Stella draft! You can definitely split this meal with someone and you better have someone helping you with those fries or you’ll be sending at least half of the plate back!

We couldn’t be happier about our new find and are already planning on returning with a big group (there’s a great central table in the back that’s perfect for a dozen or so people). And to top it off, we had two outstanding waitresses serve us. Great beer selection, awesome food, and a friendly staff? It’s a winner in my book! While it may not be a traditional dive bar, Dive Bar certainly has everything I’m looking for!
