Last week, I went to the Choice Streets event, which is a ticketed event where you can try samples from 20+ food trucks which are parked on the Intrepid. This year the event was a little different and guests got passports, so that everyone could get a sample at each truck. Here were my five favorites from last week’s event:
5). Carl’s Steaks: I tried Carl’s Steaks a few years ago, and I thought it was okay. I don’t know if my tastebuds have changed or what, but I loved their cheesesteak last week. It was smothered in American cheese, and the steak was well cooked. The bread wasn’t soggy, but wasn’t dry either – it was yummy and perfect.
4). Moo Shu Grill: Major props to Moo Shu Grill. Take your Moo Shu Chicken or Pork at a Chinese restaurant, and imagine it being served as a wrap. I had never heard of this food truck before, but really appreciate a new concept – and the hoisen sauce was a treat. Knowing I get too full at these events, I didn’t eat much of the wrap, but ate the meat and sauce and it was delicious.
3). Valducci’s Pizza: I’ve written about their deals for awhile – seems like they always have something on Twitter. I really enjoyed this pizza. It was a thick crust – if you like pizza that’s thick and crunchy, this is for you. It had a higher sauce to cheese ratio, and while you all know I’m a fan of the dairy, this is one stop I’d definitely try again.
2). Coolhaus: Speaking of dairy….Coolhaus never disappointed. The chewy snickerdoodle cookie with a mint ice cream was such a treat. The mint wasn’t overpowering and had just the right amount of flavor. I’m craving it as I write this post now on a hot spring night!
And my favorite…
1). Uncle Gussy’s: Our second stop of the night was this delightful truck where I had a chicken gyro. I almost wish I didn’t go here so early in the night, because nothing topped it. It had a yummy tzatziki sauce, and french fries and chicken filled the soft pita. My co-worker/friend Sarah and I wished that there wasn’t passports this year – only so we could stop back in for a second one. While it’s 20 blocks away from our office on 51st and Park, we are totally ready to make the hike at lunch for a taste of this Greek spot. Don’t believe me? Check out their reviews on Yelp!
